Based on the theme Tashattot (Arabic for dispersion), the artworks exhibited address the ideas of separation from homeland, distance, exile and belonging, among others. The subject and the selection of the works offer to look at the ways in which artists coming from the same geographical region, translate these notions into their disciplines; and whether (or not) similarities can be drawn from each of these individual experiences and artistic mediums. Khyam Allami is an Iraqi-British multi-instrumentalist musician, composer, researcher, and founder of Nawa Recordings. His artistic research and practice explore experimental composition and improvisation based on and inspired by the fundamentals of Arabic music&nbsp;and&nbsp;culture. Apotome: Solo Live Performance In this performance, Allami presents a new electronic maqāmic work utilising Apotome; a free browser-based software he created in collaboration with Counterpoint Studio. While aiming to maintain a continuous line of tension between her body, the space, and the spectator, this work is an occurrence that does not represent an imposed dialogue, but rather a balance between a variation of detailed patterns, and an almost stillness; a supernatural phenomenon. What is the difference between inclusion and belonging? How can those concepts help us and do we need these definitions? Does belonging mean the same for everyone? How can art help us to grasp these concepts? Researcher Yasmine Kaied will start the evening by framing concepts such as diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging and the way they relate to each other. Afterwards, artist Mekhitar Garabadian will guide us through his work into his vision of belonging and the influence of migration on someone's identity. With some small assignments, Sirien puts us to work, using Palestinian cuisine as an inspiration for drawing and conversation. Joud Abu Al Humus Joud has been an Erasmus exchange student in Tampere, Finland, has been active as a volunteer in refugee camps and in organising debates and events for the Palestinian Annual Model United Nations, gathering international students. Jules Bakker Jules Bakker is part of the Solidarity Network UGent. This new network of professors, researchers and students takes action to pressure the university to adopt the BDS strategy and suspend all cooperation with Israeli universities, companies and government institutions that support and/or benefit from the occupation and apartheid regime.
