THE COLLECTIVE

Tashattot (Arabic for dispersion) is an art collective based in Belgium dedicated to supporting visual artists, musicians, film makers and cultural practitioners at large, originally from the SWANA region and currently “dispersed” in Europe. The collective aims at creating opportunities, collaborations, commissions and securing funding for these expatriate artists.

The word tashattot and its English equivalents scattering/dispersion, define the collective in both the literal sense of the word (pertaining to the description of the individuals scattered around the world, far from their homelands), as well as its metaphorical sense which relates to the scattering and dispersion of ideas and ways of thinking, as the word in Arabic is oftentimes used to describe the wandering of the thoughts (tashattot al afkar or scattered thoughts).

Tashattot is a work in progress and a newly launched collective with a fluid and evolving set of actions. It currently is and will always remain open to new ideas and experiences; continuously building on lessons learned and with practice. The collective strongly believes in the efficiency of open discussions, as the only way to grow and better address SWANA expat artists needs and aspirations, it therefore remains open to revi
ews, critiques, evaluations or any opinions related to its mechanisms.

tashattot exhibition
KIOSK, Ghent

Tashattot is launching its first series of events with an opening art exhibition for Arabic-speaking artists residing in Europe. Based on the theme Tashattot (Arabic for dispersion), the artworks exhibited address the ideas of separation from homeland, distance, exile and belonging, among others. The subject and the selection of the works offer to look at the ways in which artists coming from the same geographical region, translate these notions into their disciplines; and whether (or not) similarities can be drawn from each of these individual experiences and artistic mediums. The works go beyond the mere depiction of “being away from home”, thus allowing us to better understand what dispersion means nowadays.

This project is made possible with the generous support of the Flemish government, KIOSK and the City of Ghent.

The time it took you to realize it was a dream

KIOSK, Ghent

March 18th-19th 2023

Tashattot Collective invites artist Stephanie Kayal to perform in the orange circle of the Tashattot exhibition on the occasion of the last weekend of the show.

“The time it took you to realize it was a dream” is the first in a series of live installations by Stephanie Kayal, in which she visits the notion of temporality. While aiming to maintain a continuous line of tension between her body, the space, and the spectator, this work is an occurrence that does not represent an imposed dialogue, but rather a balance between a variation of detailed patterns, and an almost stillness; a supernatural phenomenon. It can be received lightly, it can be received tragically; it is meant to be both.

This project is made possible with the generous support of the Flemish government, KIOSK and the City of Ghent.

An Interactive talk on the theme of Belonging and Migration

KIOSK, Ghent

March 16th 2023

What is belonging? What is the difference between inclusion and belonging? How can those concepts help us and do we need these definitions? Does belonging mean the same for everyone? How can art help us to grasp these concepts?

Researcher Yasmine Kaied will start the evening by framing concepts such as diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging and the way they relate to each other.

Afterwards, artist Mekhitar Garabadian will guide us through his work into his vision of belonging and the influence of migration on someone's identity.

The evening will be captured by artists Karen Keyrouz and Nour Hifaou.

This project is made possible with the generous support of the Flemish government, KIOSK, the City of Ghent and Gents Kunstenoverleg.
